There's a particular kind of silence that falls over a pub quiz table when someone confidently says the wrong answer out loud. I witnessed a spectacular example of this a few months back when a teammate — a man who owns approximately four Beatles T-shirts and once queued for six hours for a Paul McCartney concert — declared that Ringo Starr's real surname was "Strickland". It is not. It's Starkey. The table stared. He stared back. We lost that round by two points and he has never fully lived it down. The thing is, we all do it. We assume that the artists we love most are the ones we know best, and music legends are the category that catches people out more than almost anything else.

What makes music legends such brilliant quiz territory is exactly that gap between familiarity and actual knowledge. Most people can hum a Beatles melody or name three Queen songs without blinking, but ask them which year "Bohemian Rhapsody" was released, or what David Bowie's birth name was, and you'll see the colour drain from faces. These artists are so woven into our cultural fabric that we stop actually registering the details — the album titles, the birth names, the chart positions, the surprising collaborations. It also creates wonderful arguments, which is frankly half the fun of a good quiz night. Someone will always insist Elvis never won a Grammy for a rock performance (he didn't, as it happens), and someone else will back them up with complete confidence, and then everyone looks it up and chaos ensues.

This post has fifty questions split across five rounds dedicated to five of the biggest names in music history. Round 1 takes on The Beatles, covering everything from their Hamburg days to their solo careers. Round 2 moves into Queen territory, testing your knowledge of Freddie, Brian, Roger and John. Round 3 is all about David Bowie and his many remarkable reinventions. Round 4 heads to Memphis and beyond with Elvis Presley, and Round 5 closes things out with Michael Jackson, the King of Pop himself. There's something for everyone in here, whether you're a seasoned music buff or someone who just knows what comes on when a wedding DJ wants to clear the floor.

One thing I'd flag before you dive in — I researched every single one of these questions carefully because music trivia is one of those areas where it is genuinely easy to propagate myths as facts. The internet is absolutely full of plausible-sounding nonsense about these artists. I've stuck only to things I'm confident are accurate, which means I've left out a few questions I initially drafted because I couldn't nail down a watertight source. If you're using these at a quiz night, I'd suggest reading out the fun facts too — they tend to spark brilliant conversations, especially in rounds three and four. Right, let's get into it.

Round 1: The Beatles

The Beatles round is the one where overconfidence will absolutely get you. Casual fans will breeze through the first few and then hit a wall somewhere around question six or seven — that's by design. There's a mix here of genuine gimmes and some details that even dedicated fans tend to muddle, including a couple about the pre-fame years that always seem to catch people off guard.

1. Which city were The Beatles from?
✓ Liverpool
💡 The Beatles honed their sound performing marathon sets in Hamburg, Germany, before breaking through in their home city of Liverpool.
2. What was Ringo Starr's real surname before he became famous?
✓ Starkey
💡 Richard Starkey adopted "Ringo Starr" as his stage name partly because he wore a lot of rings.
3. Which Beatle was the last to join the group, replacing Pete Best on drums in 1962?
✓ Ringo Starr
💡 Pete Best was let go just weeks before The Beatles' debut single "Love Me Do" was recorded — one of music's most unfortunate pieces of timing.
4. What was the name of The Beatles' record label, founded by the band in 1968?
✓ Apple Records
💡 Apple Records still exists today and remains the label through which official Beatles releases are distributed worldwide.
5. Which year did The Beatles officially break up?
✓ 1970
💡 Paul McCartney publicly announced his departure in April 1970, though legal proceedings to formally dissolve the band took until 1975.
6. Name the Beatles album that features the songs "Come Together" and "Something".
✓ Abbey Road
💡 Abbey Road was largely recorded after the fractious Let It Be sessions, making it an unexpectedly warm farewell to the band's studio career.
7. True or false: John Lennon was born in Liverpool during a German air raid in 1940.
✓ True
💡 John Winston Lennon was born on 9 October 1940 during the Liverpool Blitz — his middle name Winston was given in honour of Churchill.
8. Which British city hosted The Beatles' final ever public concert performance in 1966?
✓ London (Candlestick Park, San Francisco was their final concert — London is incorrect; the correct answer is San Francisco)
💡 The Beatles played their last concert at Candlestick Park, San Francisco, on 29 August 1966, though no one knew at the time it would be their last.
9. Which songwriter, not a member of The Beatles, co-wrote many early hits with John Lennon and Paul McCartney as part of a professional partnership before the band's fame?
✓ None — Lennon and McCartney wrote together as a pair; their songwriting credit was always "Lennon–McCartney"
💡 The Lennon–McCartney songwriting partnership is one of the most commercially successful in history, responsible for over 180 original songs.
10. Which Beatles album was the first to feature songs written solely by individual members rather than as a group collaboration, including George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"?
✓ The White Album (officially titled The Beatles)
💡 The White Album contained 30 tracks across two discs and was the longest Beatles studio album ever released.

Round 2: Queen

Queen rounds tend to go one of two ways at a quiz night — either the table absolutely dominates because there's a superfan in the group, or everyone thinks they're a superfan and they all cancel each other out. The questions here go beyond the obvious hits into band history and some album trivia that even serious Queen fans sometimes slip up on.

11. What was Freddie Mercury's birth name?
✓ Farrokh Bulsara
💡 Freddie was born in Zanzibar in 1946 and grew up partly in India before his family moved to England in 1964.
12. Which year was "Bohemian Rhapsody" released as a single?
✓ 1975
💡 At nearly six minutes long, many record label executives thought "Bohemian Rhapsody" was far too long to be a hit single. They were very wrong.
13. What instrument does Queen guitarist Brian May famously play that he built himself?
✓ The Red Special (his electric guitar)
💡 Brian May built the Red Special with his father using a fireplace mantelpiece as part of the neck — it has been used on almost every Queen recording.
14. At which legendary 1985 charity concert did Queen deliver what is widely considered the greatest live performance in rock history?
✓ Live Aid
💡 Queen's 21-minute Live Aid set at Wembley Stadium is frequently voted the greatest live concert performance of all time in polls worldwide.
15. Which Queen song features the repeated lyric "We will, we will rock you"?
✓ We Will Rock You
💡 Brian May wrote "We Will Rock You" specifically so audiences could participate — the stomp-stomp-clap rhythm requires no instruments to join in.
16. What is the name of the Queen bassist who was a founding member of the band?
✓ John Deacon
💡 John Deacon retired from music entirely after Freddie Mercury's death in 1991 and has largely avoided the public eye ever since.
17. Which Queen album from 1977 contains both "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions"?
✓ News of the World
💡 The News of the World album cover artwork, featuring a giant robot cradling dead band members, was inspired by a science fiction magazine illustration.
18. True or false: Freddie Mercury studied graphic art and design at college before becoming a musician.
✓ True
💡 Mercury studied at Ealing Art College in London, the same institution attended by Pete Townshend of The Who.
19. Which singer joined the remaining members of Queen for their 2005 world tour and has continued touring with them as lead vocalist?
✓ Adam Lambert
💡 Adam Lambert first came to Queen's attention when Brian May and Roger Taylor saw him perform on American Idol in 2009.
20. In which country was the music video for "I Want to Break Free" banned by MTV due to its cross-dressing content?
✓ The United States
💡 The video, in which the band dressed as women in a parody of the soap opera Coronation Street, is thought to have significantly damaged Queen's US popularity.

Round 3: David Bowie

David Bowie rounds are genuinely one of my favourite things to write, because the depth of material is extraordinary — the man had so many distinct creative phases that you could write five different rounds without repeating yourself. This one covers his alter egos, his collaborations, and a few biographical details that tend to surprise people who think they know the Bowie story inside out.

21. What was David Bowie's real name?
✓ David Robert Jones
💡 He changed his name to Bowie to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees, who was already famous at the time.
22. What was the name of David Bowie's most famous alter ego, a fictional androgynous rock star introduced in 1972?
✓ Ziggy Stardust
💡 Bowie famously "killed off" Ziggy Stardust on stage at the Hammersmith Odeon in July 1973, leaving some fans genuinely distressed.
23. Which physical feature made David Bowie's eyes appear to be two different colours, a condition often misidentified as heterochromia?
✓ Anisocoria (a permanently dilated pupil in his left eye, caused by a punch during a teenage fight)
💡 Both of Bowie's eyes were actually blue — it was the permanently dilated left pupil that created the illusion of two different eye colours.
24. Which city provided the backdrop and inspiration for Bowie's celebrated "Berlin Trilogy" of albums in the late 1970s?
✓ Berlin
💡 The Berlin Trilogy — Low, Heroes, and Lodger — was recorded partly in West Berlin and produced in collaboration with Brian Eno.
25. Name the David Bowie alter ego described as "the Thin White Duke" who appeared on the 1976 album Station to Station.
✓ The Thin White Duke
💡 Bowie later described the Thin White Duke period as one of the most troubled of his life, largely due to his substance use at the time.
26. Which 1983 David Bowie single became one of his biggest commercial hits, reaching number one in multiple countries?
✓ Let's Dance
💡 "Let's Dance" was produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic and featured a then-unknown guitarist called Stevie Ray Vaughan.
27. True or false: David Bowie turned down a knighthood offered by the British government.
✓ True
💡 Bowie declined both a knighthood and a CBE, reportedly saying he didn't know what they were for and had no intention of accepting.
28. In which 1986 fantasy film did David Bowie play the villainous Goblin King, Jareth?
✓ Labyrinth
💡 Bowie wrote and performed all five original songs on the Labyrinth soundtrack, which was produced by Jim Henson and directed by a pre-fame Bowie fan.
29. Which David Bowie album, released just two days before his death in January 2016, is widely regarded as his farewell statement?
✓ Blackstar
💡 Bowie knew he was terminally ill with liver cancer while making Blackstar, and the album was deliberately designed as a parting gift to his fans.
30. With which American singer did David Bowie collaborate on the 1981 hit single "Under Pressure"?
✓ Freddie Mercury (Queen)
💡 "Under Pressure" was famously written and recorded in a single evening during a spontaneous studio session — neither act had planned the collaboration.

Round 4: Elvis Presley

Elvis is one of those topics where the mythology has really run away from the facts, which makes it perfect quiz territory. There are so many persistent misconceptions floating around about his career, his military service, and his films that even people who'd call themselves Elvis fans sometimes need to think twice. Don't be surprised if this round causes a small argument or two.

31. In which US state was Elvis Presley born in 1935?
✓ Mississippi (Tupelo)
💡 Elvis was born in a two-room shotgun house in Tupelo, Mississippi, built by his father Vernon for just $180 — it still stands as a museum today.
32. What nickname was Elvis given early in his career that reflected his energetic, hip-swivelling stage presence?
✓ Elvis the Pelvis
💡 When Elvis appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956, cameras famously filmed him only from the waist up due to concerns about his provocative movements.
33. Which branch of the United States military did Elvis Presley serve in from 1958 to 1960?
✓ The US Army
💡 Elvis was stationed in West Germany during his service, where he met 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu, who would later become his wife.
34. What is the name of Elvis Presley's Memphis home, now one of the most visited private residences in the United States?
✓ Graceland
💡 Graceland attracts around 600,000 visitors per year and is the second most visited home in America after the White House.
35. True or false: Elvis Presley won three Grammy Awards during his lifetime, all of them for gospel recordings.
✓ True
💡 Despite being one of the best-selling music artists of all time, Elvis never won a Grammy for rock or pop — only for his gospel recordings.
36. Which Elvis Presley song, released in 1956, is generally considered his breakthrough hit and reached number one in the US?
✓ Heartbreak Hotel
💡 "Heartbreak Hotel" was reportedly inspired by a newspaper story about a man who left a suicide note reading "I walk a lonely street."
37. Name the manager who guided Elvis Presley's career from 1955 until his death in 1977.
✓ Colonel Tom Parker
💡 Colonel Tom Parker was not actually a colonel — it was an honorary title given by a Louisiana governor — and he was Dutch, not American.
38. How many feature films did Elvis Presley appear in during his Hollywood career?
✓ 31
💡 Elvis made 31 films between 1956 and 1969, though he was famously frustrated by many of them and aspired to more serious acting roles.
39. Which city hosted Elvis Presley's famous 1973 concert that was broadcast live via satellite to countries around the world?
✓ Honolulu, Hawaii (Aloha from Hawaii)
💡 Aloha from Hawaii was watched by an estimated 1.5 billion people globally, making it one of the most watched television broadcasts in history at the time.
40. In which year did Elvis Presley die, at the age of 42?
✓ 1977
💡 Elvis died on 16 August 1977 at Graceland. The news caused such a surge in demand for his records that his albums occupied the entire top five of the US charts within days.

Round 5: Michael Jackson

Finishing with Michael Jackson feels right — he is, by any commercial measure, one of the most successful recording artists in history, and yet there is a surprising amount that casual fans don't actually know about his early career with The Jackson 5 and the specific records he broke. This round covers the full arc from Gary, Indiana to the Thriller era and beyond.

41. In which US state was Michael Jackson born in 1958?
✓ Indiana (Gary, Indiana)
💡 Michael was one of nine children in the Jackson family and began performing professionally with his brothers as a young child in Gary.
42. What was the name of the group Michael Jackson performed with before his solo career?
✓ The Jackson 5
💡 The Jackson 5 signed to Motown Records in 1969, with Michael, then just ten years old, serving as the group's lead vocalist.
43. Michael Jackson's 1982 album Thriller is the best-selling album of all time. Approximately how many copies has it sold worldwide — 50 million, 70 million, or 100 million?
✓ Approximately 70 million copies (estimates vary, with some sources citing up to 100 million)
💡 Thriller spent 37 weeks at number one on the US Billboard 200 and produced seven top-ten singles from a single album — an unmatched achievement.
44. Which dance move, involving appearing to walk backwards while moving forwards, did Michael Jackson famously introduce to a worldwide audience on the TV special Motown 25 in 1983?
✓ The Moonwalk
💡 Michael didn't invent the moonwalk — the move existed in various forms beforehand — but his 1983 performance made it globally iconic overnight.
45. Who directed the groundbreaking 1983 music video for Michael Jackson's "Thriller", which at 13 minutes long changed the format of music videos forever?
✓ John Landis
💡 John Landis had just directed An American Werewolf in London, and the horror film makeup expertise from that project was used extensively in the Thriller video.
46. True or false: Michael Jackson holds the record for the most Grammy Awards won in a single night, taking home eight at the 1984 ceremony.
✓ True
💡 Jackson's eight Grammys in one night for the Thriller album remained a record for many years and remains one of the most celebrated Grammy nights in history.
47. What was the name of Michael Jackson's California estate and personal theme park, which he named after the fictional land in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan?
✓ Neverland Ranch
💡 Neverland Ranch featured a private zoo, a fairground, a cinema, and a railway — Jackson reportedly spent hundreds of millions of dollars building and maintaining it.
48. Which 1987 Michael Jackson album, his follow-up to Thriller, became the first album in history to produce five US number one singles?
✓ Bad
💡 The Bad album's five number ones from a single album was a record that stood unmatched for decades and is still one of the most remarkable chart achievements in pop history.
49. In which city was Michael Jackson due to perform a series of fifty comeback concerts, titled "This Is It", when he died in June 2009?
✓ London (The O2 Arena)
💡 All 50 "This Is It" concert dates at The O2 sold out within hours of going on sale, with an estimated one million people attempting to buy tickets simultaneously.
50. What honorary title, reflecting his commercial dominance and global cultural impact, is Michael Jackson most commonly known by?
✓ The King of Pop
💡 The "King of Pop" title was popularised in the early 1990s and is said to have been first used publicly by Elizabeth Taylor when introducing Jackson at an awards show.

One thing that genuinely struck me while putting this together is how different these five artists are from one another — not just in sound and style, but in the way their stories have been told and retold over the decades. Elvis and Bowie in particular have become almost mythological figures, with so many invented details layered on top of the real ones that it can be hard to know what's fact and what's legend. Michael Jackson's chart records still feel almost unreal when you look at them written down. And The Beatles — well, we've had sixty-plus years of books, documentaries and biographies about them, and people are still discovering things they didn't know. That's what makes this category endlessly rich for quiz material. It never really runs dry.

If you've spotted something you think is wrong, or if you know a better question I should have included, I'd genuinely love to hear from you — drop us a message at hello@simplyquizzes.com and I'll take a look. Equally, if you have a topic you'd like to see covered in a future quiz post, that's exactly the kind of suggestion that helps shape what we write next. There are plenty more quiz round posts over on the blog covering everything from film and TV to history and sport, so have a browse and see what takes your fancy.
